At the Milan furniture fair this year there were two distinct trains of thought regarding photography. 1) Take photos, 2) Don’t take photos. (There was also a grey area, “take photos… but not too close”) Part of the distinction seemed to be linked to the size of the manufacturer. Small independents were far more welcoming of photographs… free advertising! Some had signs up encouraging the sharing of their work with links to social media etc. Some of the larger manufacturers were probably more concerned with “recording to rip off”. The side effect of this choice was that sometimes your first interaction with anyone on a stand was to be eyed with suspicion if you were holding a camera… This defiantly set the tone of the relationship from the outset.
